Kniphofia/Hot Poker Plant - Tall yellow Poker - Perennials
Pokers are strong growing perennials and make an easy care low maintenance plant in home gardens. The one we have is the Tall Yellow Poker. They Flower in Spring/Summer and do best in a sunny site and can tolerate most soil conditions with good drainage. They are also hardy to dry and cold which make them a gardeners favourite.
Kniphofia might have had a better lot in the life of NZ gardens if we called them by some of their other common names. Knofflers sound so much more whimsical, torch lilies more exotic but alas we usually refer to them as the less attractive hot pokers and treat them as low grade roadside plants which they really aren't as they look stunning in the garden.
Not all kniphofia are the same – there are tall ones, short ones, yellows, bicolours, deciduous, evergreen and finer foliaged options.
Don’t overlook them for late summer colour as they look brilliant with their yellow pokers and look stunning inside the home as a cut flower!
